-Disillusions-

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can I be honest with you?

I need some marriage advice. No, not for any of my relationships, but for the life that I said "I do" to, last year.

The honeymoon stage has officially ended. One year in, and it's time for the rocky stuff to start. No deep dark scandals or hidden agendas. Just hard stuff being hard. Humans being humans. Sin being sin. Imperfect people being imperfect. Don't go get all up in arms, I expected disillusion. I knew it was coming.

Like a new marriage, the time of testing has come. Will I still love you now that you have hurt me? Now that I know a different side of you? Now that I know that we are both selfish?

Don't we all experience disillusion in our lives? Disillusioned with a spouse, a job, a child, a church or a friend, we all carry the past wounds of unmet, or worse, completely shattered expectations. I can literally hear the sound of all of you married folks' heads nodding with understanding. You know what I'm talking about.

So how do we handle it? What do we do? How do we respond when we feel hurt, or lied to, or betrayed?

Give up? Get angry? Get bitter? Whine? Mope? Wallow? Run? Hide? Add fuel to the fire with our own self-righteousness?

Let me tell you what I think I know. I know that ALL things in this life aside from Christ are bound to disappoint us. We need to get used to it. Christ is the only reality that can meet my expectations.

So it's time for me to fall back in love again. Time for a re-up. Time to remember my one true love, Christ. Time to fall in love with the life that I really married, and not the life that I thought I got myself into. Time to remember that I too, am broken and selfish, and sinful beyond measure. Time to take the plank out of my own eye and own up to the fuel that I added to the flames. Time for a new kind of love. The kind of love that follows commitment, and not the romantic idealistic love that precedes commitment.

So I pour out my heart like water before the Lord. I repeat His promises to myself over and over again. I wait patiently. I do not give up on doing good.  I will trust His call. I will listen for His voice. I will not abandon the work of His hands. I will not call my mother or my girlfriends and complain about my proverbial "husband." I will love. I will build. I will respect. I will pray. I will believe. I will trust the One who sent me. I put my whole life into this place, I am committed to it, and I love it.

And in the mean time? I will REJOICE. I never understood that passage until now. "Consider it pure joy, whenever you face trials of many kinds." What? How can I rejoice? My heart is broken! I'm not going to "put on a happy face" if my heart isn't in it anymore!

I can rejoice because I know that while my heart may be temporarily injured, my character is not. I've been told that hard times produce perseverance, and that perseverance builds more character, and that character produces hope: hope that the reward waiting on the other side is worth the pain.  Welcome to maturity. Doing the hard thing that you know will ultimately bring about good results, even when you don't feel like doing it. It's that simple.

So when you see me smiling through the tears or clasping hands with the one I chose despite the tension, try not to judge me. I'm not faking it, I'm building character. I'm holding out to prove that Hope is true.

-Goodbyes-

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each time I wait for that feeling. It gets really quiet inside my head and I can't seem to respond to or concentrate on the person talking to me. It hits me unexpectedly, but it always hits at some point on their very last day. Getting dressed, drying my hair, getting into the car. My hands get sweaty, my heart starts pounding, and I get nervous as I wait for the anxiety to take over. I think I'm going to be sick. I can't talk, the tears fill up my eyes and my voice catches shakily in my throat.

Here comes goodbye.

Again.

It's the "hurry-up-and-wait" of goodbyes that will get you. Making sure they have everything. Putting the luggage in the car. Driving to the airport. Waiting in line to check in. Standing around waiting for that last long hug that has to sustain you for months. The sweet moments of shared prayer not caring who is watching. The last wave. The long walk away from the gate and the last look back.

I've learned a lot about goodbyes this year.

I've put so many people that I love onto a plane flying away from me this past year, that I think I lost count around twenty.

But do you know what? Even with all of those goodbyes, God has been so good to me. Each and every time I've had to say goodbye, I've waited for that awful sinking feeling to take over, and instead it hasn't come at all.

Instead of tears of sadness, there have been tears of joy. Instead of being filled with anxiety, I am filled with thankfulness. Instead of fear, there is peace. Instead of being overwhelmed by doubt, I am overwhelmed by His faithfulness to me. Instead of being filled with the pain of loss, I am filled with the purposefulness of why He has me here.

Instead of dreading my frequent late night drive home from the Cape Town airport, it has become a time that I look forward to. Instead of anticipating that the drive ahead will be filled with heartache and angst, I have come to believe that it is an appointed time, a sacred time even. A time where I hear God very clearly calling my name yet again. A re-confirmation. A re-commitment.

I have found that I never drive home alone, and that I never leave that airport without Someone holding my hand. Each and every time Peace has come and taken it's seat as my passenger, safely buckled in alongside of me for the journey, and every time I find myself lifting my hands in praise, recognizing that God keeps calling me here everyday. Thankful doesn't even begin to cover it.

Lord, you are good and your mercy endures forever!

-Team Time II-

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the neatest things about the specific place that God has called me to at Living Hope, is that He didn't just call me. I'm a part of a much bigger story. I'm so thankful that He sent other missionaries from my home church to work here too! I often count my blessings that God could have called me to live way out in the bush somewhere by myself, but instead chose to prepare a place for me to fit in, feel at home, and feel loved and supported along the way through this African journey.

Living Hope is chalk full of Brentwood Baptist missionaries, and the ongoing partnership between Living Hope and Brentwood Baptist greatly blesses and benefits those of us living here, as well as our fellow church members back home. There is a reason that God didn't make Christianity out to be a solo effort. We are meant to live in community. We are designed to serve in community. We are purposed to love in community. We are truly better together.

So many people have caught the vision of Living Hope and we are blessed exponentially by each person  that chooses to join us or visit us along the way in our journey. That includes the 5 "units" of missionaries that BBC has on the field, the larger BBC community that collectively supports all of us, the 3-4 mission teams that come from BBC each year, all of the missionaries that live and work in Cape Town, and not to mention the hundreds of other churches that partner with Living Hope!

Your BBC crew

I really am a lucky girl. If ever I doubt what God has called me to, there are so many others here to re-affirm my calling, lift me up and help me keep walking. And when all of us are feeling weary and heavy laden? God sends us a piece of home straight from the U.S. in the form of a short term team, full of love and encouragement.

We love having teams. They are a delight to us. They encourage us. They support us. They pray with us and for us. They feed us! They bring us surprises from home and hugs from loved ones. They bring bank cards and important documents we didn't want to risk mailing. They get to know our families and friends back home and help to sustain those important connections on our behalf. They listen to us. They ask great questions. They walk a mile in our shoes. They take pictures of our work. They "ooh" and  "ahh" over our ministries and they make us feel special. They take on special project dear to our hearts. They ride camels and open ostrich eggs with us. They laugh with us. They make new memories with us. They work alongside of us and get behind the mission of what we do. They meet our coworkers and our clients. They talk to our supervisors and make friends with the maintenance guys. They tell us how proud they are of us and how grateful they are. They remind us of why we are here.

Here's to you Team... We love you!

Thank you guys! We can't wait to have you back!

-Team Time-

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whew! What a whirlwind of a week. As always, having a team visiting from your home church means a jam packed crazy busy schedule, but always proves to be an awesome time in the end. This Eye Team from Brentwood Baptist proved to be no different! What a great group of folks. I only knew a few people on the team prior to them arriving, so it was a joy to get to connect with old friends and meet some new ones as well.

This is the second annual trip for the BBC eye team, and we continue to see such a benefit from the services that they provide on behalf of Living Hope. The team was here for just a week to run eye clinics at each of the townships that Living Hope works in, but the impact they had will last much longer than a week! As with all other types and kinds of services in the townships, eye testing is pretty much unheard of, and even if you could get an eye test, it is very likely that you couldn't afford the prescription glasses required.

After setting up in a new township each and every day, we opened the doors to long lines of people waiting outside, and let the madness of the next 5 or so hours begin! Clients underwent a generalized health screening with blood pressure and blood sugar checks, HIV/TB screenings, diet & weight assessment, eye screening, glasses fitting, foot washing and time of prayer.

It's always interesting for us long term missionaries to watch ministry happen within a condensed interaction between a short-term volunteer and the patient they are seeing. Often clients reveal very personal things to visiting team members that they might not feel comfortable revealing to people who live here and see them everyday. More than a few heartbreaking stories poured out and the tears flowed when we asked the clients how we could pray for them. And in the tradition of following Christ's servant example of foot washing, we love to see how spoiled and loved on clients feel after that treat!

For all of us, watching a client walk away with tears of joy streaming down their face, is why we do what we do. 600 people are seeing better this week thanks to the BBC team and I was so glad to get a chance to work with them.  In our down time, we had our fun as well, and of course we will never suffer from a shortage of inside jokes! I have to say that this team was filled with patient, loving, caring and kind folks that took the time with each client in providing the services they did, and I am just proud to know them. Can't wait 'til next year!
