Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

Happy Birthday Momma!

So... my good looking, gorgeous, wonderful, delightful, fantastic Mom, Angie, is turning a certain age today, and in celebration, I have chose a random number of items that may or may not correlate with the number of years she is turning to detail just how much I love about her! Happy Birthday Mom! I love you!

What I love about my Mom:
1. How much she loves being  a mom. It is seriously one of her greatest joys. She recognizes that being a mother is a high calling and she feels specifically called to love and raise her children extremely well. She has told me plenty of times that she knew that God chose her to raise a family such as ours. She has done a great job with the five of us, and I only hope to be half as selfless as a Mom as she has been.
2. Everything she taught me.  If I know it, she probably had a hand in it.
3. How she has always taken care of our MANY many pets with enthusiasm and commitment, despite death or dismemberment of some of them. Eek! The pet list has been LONG and includes dogs, cats, fish, frogs, turtles, rabbits, hamsters, horses, gerbils, birds, rats and a few more exotic varieties. Thanks Mom!
4. How she never said no to any new thing we wanted to do.
5. How she was such a trooper every time we moved. The woman is a master packer after about 17 Air Force moves, and all with a good attitude to boot... Well, excpet for that one time, in South Dakota with the paint inside the oven... not so much that one. She knows which one I mean.
6. She drove us, by herself, from South Dakota to Alabama, a 24 hour drive, every summer to see family and go the beach. Road warrior.
7. She drove my sisters from D.C. to TN every summer for the same reason.
8. She drove a mini van with pride and she liked it. She really was a soccer Mom!
9. She taught me to love nursing from a very young age when I used to get to visit her at work... or for that matter when I was in-utero on the floor with her!
10. She had me without an epidural. Can I get an Amen? That's right I just used the word epidural and in-utero on my blog. Welcome to my world.
11. Her love for worship music. She likes the old early 90's CCM stuff.
12. She taught me that if you find something you like, buy it in 3 different colors. You never know when you might find it again.
13. The woman has never spent a dime on herself. She wouldn't even know where to start if you sent her on a spending spree.
14. She loves to sew. Quilts, clothes, wall hangings, hems etc. You name it, she can Surge it.
15. She had horses while we were growing up and taught me to ride, as well as providing hours of playtime in the barn with barn cats and hay bales and rope swings. Good times!
16. She can still slalom water ski better than anyone in our family. Get it girl. Get it.
17. She kills snakes. Big ones. With hoes. And never screams. I did not inherit this ability.
18. She has never been afraid to pick up any wild creature/creepy crawling thing and teach us about it. I also did not inherit this ability. Gross.
19. She is a great gardener. She grew our food long before it was popular.
20. She makes a mean pot of french onion soup with yummy cheesy bread on the top, in her special Czech white porcelain china with the little handles that I love so much.
21. She loves Greek and German food just like my Dad. In this family we can put away some Gyros & Tzatiki.
22. Where do you think I got my biscuit making skills from?
23. She decorated the most AMAZING birthday cakes for us every year. The Mickey Mouse year was a huge hit.
24. She made all of my Easter dresses until I was 12. Ruffles, gloves, matching hats, matching purses and all.
25. She LOVES babies. Like loves them. It's crazy. She is a baby magnet.
26. She has always been involved with our church.
27. She taught me to love crafting. Hot glue guns and Ric Rac here I come!
28. We talk everyday. Sometimes multiple times a day. Hi Mom!
29. I get my love of reading from her. I was reading adult books in second grade and she just kept it going after that.
30. She home schooled us for a couple of years when the schools nearby weren't adequate. We fought... a lot. Who me? Stubborn? Thanks for being committed to my education Mom, despite that entire year of back talk and sass in 8th grade.
31. She cleans like nobobdys business. If it ain't been bleached, it ain't clean.
32. She was never afraid to do anything on her own with three kids. Fly to Germany? Tour the castles? Speak the language? Why not?
33. How much she loves the beach. Wind, sand and sun are her top three love languages.
34. She taught me to be beautiful without clothes, makeup or fancy hairstyles. She just is pretty.
35. The testimony she can give for the way she came to faith. It's real. It's true. It's amazing.
36. She is in a weekly roller skating group. That's right... roller skating, in a rink with a disco ball and fancy wheels. They call her "Speed Demon Ange." Slow down before someone breaks a hip! Oh wait...
37. The way her cedar hope chest holds all her earthly treasures.
38.  All of her favorite movies are all sad. I hate sad movies! No, Mom, no!
39. She is the world's best cuddler and consequently caused my entire family's love language to turn out as physical touch. Anyone need a hug?
40. She can do any job that my dad can do, and has, over the years.
41. She never complains. Ever.
42. When my Dad bought her a new car for the first time ever 8 years ago, she protested and said he should take it back and couldn't believe it was for her.
43. Her down to earth practical nature.
44. Her tenderheartedness. It eats her alive if she knows she's upset you.
45. Her never ending search for the perfect hair-spray. She really is a southern girl at heart. The higher the hair the closer to Jesus!
46. She used to wear lace collars, navy sailor dresses and white pumps in the 80's. Well her, Lady Di and everyone else. Nice mom. Nice.
47. The amount of grace and forgiveness she has demonstrated to so many people in her past.
48. 29 years later she and Dad are still married. What an example of faithfulness.
49. She actually enjoys camping. Are you jealous yet?
50. She can only braid my hair inside out like a corn row. It's really funny :)
51. She loves us unconditionally and always will.

Love you lady!

O Lord my God; you have given so much to me. Give me one more thing; a grateful heart. Not thankful when it pleases me, as if your blessing had sparse days, but a heart whose very pulse gives you praise.

In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus.

And when I am alone, give me Jesus.

And when I am afraid, give me Jesus.

And when I come to die, give me Jesus.

Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus.

You can have all of this world. Give me Jesus.

I Need Africa More than Africa Needs Me

There is an organization here in Nashville that has an eye-catching, conversation starting motto: "I Need Africa More Than Africa Needs Me."

I purchased a t-shirt in support of their work a few years back and needless to say I get more than a few funny looks and questions when I wear it.

Here's what's printed on the inside back of the tee... It caused me to pause and think and I hope it does the same for you:

"When I think of Africa, the following images immediately come to mind:  Starvation.  AIDS.  Child soldiers.  Genocide.  Sex slaves.  Orphans.

From there, my thoughts naturally turn to how I can help, how I can make a difference. "I am needed here," I think. "They have so little, and I have so much." It's true, there are great tragedies playing out in Africa everyday. There is often a level of suffering here that is unimaginable until you have seen it, and even then it is difficult to believe.

But what is even harder is reconciling the challenges that many Africans face with the joy I see in those same people. It's a joy that comes from somewhere I cannot fathom, not within the framework that has been my life to this day.

The images spilling out of my television showed circumstances that could seemingly only equal misery, and I was fooled. I bought into the lie that circumstance defines happiness. The truth is, in Africa I find hearts full of victory, indomitable spirits. In places where despair should thrive, instead I find adults dancing and singing, and children playing soccer with a ball crafted of tied up trash. Instead of payback, I find grace. Here, weekend getaways are not options to provide relief from the pains of daily life. Relationships and faith provide joy. Love is sovereign.

My new reality… I know now that my joy should have no regard for my circumstances. I'm ashamed by my lack of faith, but at the very same moment I am excited by my new pursuit. I'm forced to redefine the meaning of having much or having little. I'm uneasy with the prospect of change and of letting go, but just the thought of freedom is liberating. I want what I have learned to trickle down from my head into my heart - I no longer want to need the "next thing" to have joy.

I'm not saying that Africa does not need our efforts. It absolutely does need our partnership. But for me, I've come to understand that I NEED AFRICA MORE THAN AFRICA NEEDS ME.

Why? Because it is Africa that has taught me that possessions in my hands will never be as valuable as peace in my heart. I've learned that I don't need what I have and that I have what I need. These are just a few of this continent's many lessons. I came here to serve and yet I've found that I have so much to learn, and Africa, with all its need, has much to teach me."

A Packing Tutorial...

Step One: Purchase a really large suitcase and several space bags. Set about your task with a serious sense of denial. It ain't just a river in Egypt.

Step Two: Assemble a year's worth of clothes that pile up high enough to rival Mt. Everest.

Step Three:  Accept reality and give away half the clothes you had originally decided to bring. I hear missionaries are supposed to be ugly anyhow. Remember, Jesus loves you just the way you are... unfashionable or otherwise!

Step Four: Fold clothes & vacuum out the air. Voila! Off you go!

And that, my friends, is how you get it done!

Please, Step into my Office...

Although I've been have to known to cause my own occasional F4 tornado of messiness, generally speaking, I like my house and life nice, neat and pretty. I like to know where things are. I get stressed when I can't find important stuff.  I wouldn't say I'm organizationally gifted, but this my friends is what a "my-desk-is-now-the-entire-dining-room" cry for help looks like:

I'd invite you to sit and stay awhile, but... as you can see, I still have a few things to get done...

The Things I'm Saying Hello To!

Since I have long belabored all the things I'm going to miss in the States, and all the preparation I'm doing to get to me Cape Town, how about a little preview of what I have to look forward to over there in South Africa? Here goes:

A FREE seven day trip to Paris to see my sweet and wonderful friend Emily who is currently living in Paris, working as a nanny. In order to get to Cape Town, I had to make a connecting flight somewhere in Europe, so a stop-over in Paris was the perfect way to take a small break between my old job and my new job! Looking forward to drinking good wine, seeing the sights and spending quality time with Emily!

A new job: Living Hope Community Centre's vision is to bring the hope and compassion of Jesus Christ to the chronically sick and dying in a holistic way and do all we can to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. mission to spread the good news of Jesus Christ in a life-changing way and to encourage people to follow Him.

This view: You may start feeling sorry for me at any time.

A country with a complex history. I still have much to learn about it's culture and people:

Wildlife: And I do mean WILD!

Two words: CUTE African babies. This one is for you Kathryn Campbell & Casey Freeman.

Lots of wind. Like 40 mile an hour wind. All the time. I'm currently working on finding new hairstyles so this doesn't happen to me!

Driving on the left hand side of the road. God help us.

The Metric System: I've already downloaded several iphone apps to help me learn to convert all the medical numbers neccessary to take care of my patients and to know how warm/cool it is outside!

Rugby: No clue...

New friends: Courtney & Joey Lankford and their cute kiddos, who are also sent out from my church to work at Living Hope, and although we have never met, I'm hoping we become fast friends!

Also Danielle Schneider from BBC works with the Life Skills Education program and helped me lots in preparing to move over there!

A new disease. Since I've never worked with HIV/AIDS in any capacity, I have lots to learn!
A South African AIDS patient holds his antiretroviral medication.

A Cruiser Bike. They are all the rage. I'm somewhat stubbornly refusing to buy/rent a car. I'm going to see how long I can hold out. Pray for me. I have issues. I am cheap just like my Dad.

Hopefully that gives you a little picture of what's to come! Stay tuned for more!

I'm better now...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So you might have noticed I "forgot" to blog in the last few days. I didn't mean to lead you on like that.

It's not you, it's me.

I'm sorry to make you believe that on a regular basis I might blog, and then I just up and abandoned you last Thursday, leaving you hanging for approximately 3 whole days, with no explanation whatsoever... but I have
excuses reasons people! And they are as follows:

I got some sort of stomach bug late Wednesday night and couldn't get out of bed for two days. It was crappy. Literally. Too much information? I'm better now!

I had some sin in my life that me and Jesus had to have a little meeting about. We met, He talked, I'm better now.

On Saturday, I had an yard sale in the snow, where we may or may not be missing items we were not intending to sell. Maybe I'll be better off without them now.

I was missing my Daddy, so I wrote him a lot of notes. But he called on Saturday night and we talked for an hour and a half, so I 'm better now.

I had two long prayer meetings and a guidance team meeting all filled with really great and supportive people. I feel a whole lot better about leaving now.

I got to spend a delightful evening with my Aunt & Uncle and cousins who tell me that they love me a lot. I think my heart is beating a little better now.

I got to talk this morning at an all African-American church. I think I'm a better person for knowing that wonderful group of people now.

So can you forgive me? Will you be my readers again? Can we blog and make up?

I promise it will all be better now...

Won't You Be My Love?

So ya'll know how much of a music lover I am. In case you didn't know that little factoid about me, I pretty much have music playing 24 hours a day. I really don't like to do any chore or task or activity without some jamming tunes in the background. So, from time to time, I'll be forced to let my love of good tunes spill over to this blog, and share with you some of my favorite music and videos! Hopefully both at the same time!

Generally, I am known for liking "angsty" music. According to good 'ole Wikipedia, "angst" is a term that "describes intense feelings of profound emotional inner turmoil" or "general feelings of conflict between actual responsibilities to self, one's principles, and others, including God." So I guess I like music that tears my heart out and stomps on it. Prepare to be angsted.

As for today's musical post, I wouldn't go as far to say that I'm a "big fan" of Mercy Me, as I really don't know much about them or their music, but this song by them really spoke to me.  Here's the video I originally heard it over, and the lyrics follow below.

When you fall asleep tonight
In your warm and cozy room
Know that I'm awake
And I've got no shelter and no food

I am not alone
My friends are broke and lost
Looking for someone to lead them to my cross
I need your help, I need your help

Won't you be My voice calling
Won't you be My hands healing
Won't you be My feet walking into a broken world
Won't you be My chain-breaker
Won't you be My peacemaker
Won't you be My hope and joy
Won't you be My Love

The other side of the world
She is just a few days old
A helpless little girl
With no family of her own

She is not to blame for the journey she is on
Her life is no mistake
Won't you lead her to My cross?

Won't you be My voice calling
Won't you be My hands healing
Won't you be My feet walking into a broken world
Won't you be My chain-breaker
Won't you be My peacemaker
Won't you be My hope and joy
Won't you be My Love

To those I call My own
To those I've set aside
As spotless without blame
The chosen ones My bride

We will be Your voice calling
We will be Your hands healing
We will be Your feet walking into a broken world
We will be Your chain-breaker
We will be Your peacemaker
We will be Your hope and joy
We will be Your love

More angst to come in the following days.... I'll let you take a minute to process this one first...

Don't move...

No really, I mean it. You might want to seriously reconsider packing up your stuff and actually geographically relocating, unless you have some sick and twisted enjoyment of the following:

Using body wash as hand soap. Why would I buy new hand soap when I have a perfectly good container of body wash that needs using up before I leave?

Eating only popcorn, canned artichokes and rice for a week. This is what will be left in your pantry after packing. Mmm Dinner!

Showering with only the clear liner in place. I took down the outside curtain a few days ago only to be left feeling... a little... well... ehem...vulnerable.

Ascending and descending 12,000 flights of stairs, 12,000 times with 12,000 HEAVY boxes and barely escaping to live to exaggerate tell about it. Ouch. Ugh. Argh. Humpf. Whew. Geez.

Using a shoebox as a nightstand.

Using suitcases as dresser drawers.

Sleeping on mattresses... on the floor.

Using curse words. More than I care to admit. Well actually, I just did admit it :)

Losing things. A lot of things. Like everything I own at least once. Some things will be found again. Others will not. You didn't really need clean socks today anyhow. Try not to cry. Try not to cry. You aren't pretty when you cry.

Inhaling dust bunnies... or dust pterodactyls... or  entire dust alien planets with alien populations that are flying warships armed with dust ray guns.... You get the point. Moving is dusty.

Letting random Craigslist people in your house. Wow. There are some odd ones out there. And they have CATS. Lots of cats.  Cats with diabetes. Lord, help us all.

Using plastic serving ware for more than a month. Yum. Not.

Watching downgraded cable. Sorry, championship games are not included, and if suddenly you find yourself watching the mayor's weekly meetings because that is the only thing on, you should just turn it off all together and walk away.

Living in total chaos. I have pictures, but you don't want to see them. No one should ever see them. I shouldn't even see them.

Scratching the hardwood floors right before you are supposed to get your deposit back. What the heck!?! Hello, you God sent bottle of Old English!!! Where have you been all my life!?!

Yard sales... In January. After an ice storm. An ice storm in which little old ladies break hips. That's all I have to say about that...

Alright. That's it for today. I have to go look for the sanity and normalcy I misplaced sometime last week. You may pray for me. The end.
