Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

Happy Birthday Momma!

So... my good looking, gorgeous, wonderful, delightful, fantastic Mom, Angie, is turning a certain age today, and in celebration, I have chose a random number of items that may or may not correlate with the number of years she is turning to detail just how much I love about her! Happy Birthday Mom! I love you!

What I love about my Mom:
1. How much she loves being  a mom. It is seriously one of her greatest joys. She recognizes that being a mother is a high calling and she feels specifically called to love and raise her children extremely well. She has told me plenty of times that she knew that God chose her to raise a family such as ours. She has done a great job with the five of us, and I only hope to be half as selfless as a Mom as she has been.
2. Everything she taught me.  If I know it, she probably had a hand in it.
3. How she has always taken care of our MANY many pets with enthusiasm and commitment, despite death or dismemberment of some of them. Eek! The pet list has been LONG and includes dogs, cats, fish, frogs, turtles, rabbits, hamsters, horses, gerbils, birds, rats and a few more exotic varieties. Thanks Mom!
4. How she never said no to any new thing we wanted to do.
5. How she was such a trooper every time we moved. The woman is a master packer after about 17 Air Force moves, and all with a good attitude to boot... Well, excpet for that one time, in South Dakota with the paint inside the oven... not so much that one. She knows which one I mean.
6. She drove us, by herself, from South Dakota to Alabama, a 24 hour drive, every summer to see family and go the beach. Road warrior.
7. She drove my sisters from D.C. to TN every summer for the same reason.
8. She drove a mini van with pride and she liked it. She really was a soccer Mom!
9. She taught me to love nursing from a very young age when I used to get to visit her at work... or for that matter when I was in-utero on the floor with her!
10. She had me without an epidural. Can I get an Amen? That's right I just used the word epidural and in-utero on my blog. Welcome to my world.
11. Her love for worship music. She likes the old early 90's CCM stuff.
12. She taught me that if you find something you like, buy it in 3 different colors. You never know when you might find it again.
13. The woman has never spent a dime on herself. She wouldn't even know where to start if you sent her on a spending spree.
14. She loves to sew. Quilts, clothes, wall hangings, hems etc. You name it, she can Surge it.
15. She had horses while we were growing up and taught me to ride, as well as providing hours of playtime in the barn with barn cats and hay bales and rope swings. Good times!
16. She can still slalom water ski better than anyone in our family. Get it girl. Get it.
17. She kills snakes. Big ones. With hoes. And never screams. I did not inherit this ability.
18. She has never been afraid to pick up any wild creature/creepy crawling thing and teach us about it. I also did not inherit this ability. Gross.
19. She is a great gardener. She grew our food long before it was popular.
20. She makes a mean pot of french onion soup with yummy cheesy bread on the top, in her special Czech white porcelain china with the little handles that I love so much.
21. She loves Greek and German food just like my Dad. In this family we can put away some Gyros & Tzatiki.
22. Where do you think I got my biscuit making skills from?
23. She decorated the most AMAZING birthday cakes for us every year. The Mickey Mouse year was a huge hit.
24. She made all of my Easter dresses until I was 12. Ruffles, gloves, matching hats, matching purses and all.
25. She LOVES babies. Like loves them. It's crazy. She is a baby magnet.
26. She has always been involved with our church.
27. She taught me to love crafting. Hot glue guns and Ric Rac here I come!
28. We talk everyday. Sometimes multiple times a day. Hi Mom!
29. I get my love of reading from her. I was reading adult books in second grade and she just kept it going after that.
30. She home schooled us for a couple of years when the schools nearby weren't adequate. We fought... a lot. Who me? Stubborn? Thanks for being committed to my education Mom, despite that entire year of back talk and sass in 8th grade.
31. She cleans like nobobdys business. If it ain't been bleached, it ain't clean.
32. She was never afraid to do anything on her own with three kids. Fly to Germany? Tour the castles? Speak the language? Why not?
33. How much she loves the beach. Wind, sand and sun are her top three love languages.
34. She taught me to be beautiful without clothes, makeup or fancy hairstyles. She just is pretty.
35. The testimony she can give for the way she came to faith. It's real. It's true. It's amazing.
36. She is in a weekly roller skating group. That's right... roller skating, in a rink with a disco ball and fancy wheels. They call her "Speed Demon Ange." Slow down before someone breaks a hip! Oh wait...
37. The way her cedar hope chest holds all her earthly treasures.
38.  All of her favorite movies are all sad. I hate sad movies! No, Mom, no!
39. She is the world's best cuddler and consequently caused my entire family's love language to turn out as physical touch. Anyone need a hug?
40. She can do any job that my dad can do, and has, over the years.
41. She never complains. Ever.
42. When my Dad bought her a new car for the first time ever 8 years ago, she protested and said he should take it back and couldn't believe it was for her.
43. Her down to earth practical nature.
44. Her tenderheartedness. It eats her alive if she knows she's upset you.
45. Her never ending search for the perfect hair-spray. She really is a southern girl at heart. The higher the hair the closer to Jesus!
46. She used to wear lace collars, navy sailor dresses and white pumps in the 80's. Well her, Lady Di and everyone else. Nice mom. Nice.
47. The amount of grace and forgiveness she has demonstrated to so many people in her past.
48. 29 years later she and Dad are still married. What an example of faithfulness.
49. She actually enjoys camping. Are you jealous yet?
50. She can only braid my hair inside out like a corn row. It's really funny :)
51. She loves us unconditionally and always will.

Love you lady!

O Lord my God; you have given so much to me. Give me one more thing; a grateful heart. Not thankful when it pleases me, as if your blessing had sparse days, but a heart whose very pulse gives you praise.

I Need Africa More than Africa Needs Me

There is an organization here in Nashville that has an eye-catching, conversation starting motto: "I Need Africa More Than Africa Needs Me."

I purchased a t-shirt in support of their work a few years back and needless to say I get more than a few funny looks and questions when I wear it.

Here's what's printed on the inside back of the tee... It caused me to pause and think and I hope it does the same for you:

"When I think of Africa, the following images immediately come to mind:  Starvation.  AIDS.  Child soldiers.  Genocide.  Sex slaves.  Orphans.

From there, my thoughts naturally turn to how I can help, how I can make a difference. "I am needed here," I think. "They have so little, and I have so much." It's true, there are great tragedies playing out in Africa everyday. There is often a level of suffering here that is unimaginable until you have seen it, and even then it is difficult to believe.

But what is even harder is reconciling the challenges that many Africans face with the joy I see in those same people. It's a joy that comes from somewhere I cannot fathom, not within the framework that has been my life to this day.

The images spilling out of my television showed circumstances that could seemingly only equal misery, and I was fooled. I bought into the lie that circumstance defines happiness. The truth is, in Africa I find hearts full of victory, indomitable spirits. In places where despair should thrive, instead I find adults dancing and singing, and children playing soccer with a ball crafted of tied up trash. Instead of payback, I find grace. Here, weekend getaways are not options to provide relief from the pains of daily life. Relationships and faith provide joy. Love is sovereign.

My new reality… I know now that my joy should have no regard for my circumstances. I'm ashamed by my lack of faith, but at the very same moment I am excited by my new pursuit. I'm forced to redefine the meaning of having much or having little. I'm uneasy with the prospect of change and of letting go, but just the thought of freedom is liberating. I want what I have learned to trickle down from my head into my heart - I no longer want to need the "next thing" to have joy.

I'm not saying that Africa does not need our efforts. It absolutely does need our partnership. But for me, I've come to understand that I NEED AFRICA MORE THAN AFRICA NEEDS ME.

Why? Because it is Africa that has taught me that possessions in my hands will never be as valuable as peace in my heart. I've learned that I don't need what I have and that I have what I need. These are just a few of this continent's many lessons. I came here to serve and yet I've found that I have so much to learn, and Africa, with all its need, has much to teach me."

A Packing Tutorial...

Step One: Purchase a really large suitcase and several space bags. Set about your task with a serious sense of denial. It ain't just a river in Egypt.

Step Two: Assemble a year's worth of clothes that pile up high enough to rival Mt. Everest.

Step Three:  Accept reality and give away half the clothes you had originally decided to bring. I hear missionaries are supposed to be ugly anyhow. Remember, Jesus loves you just the way you are... unfashionable or otherwise!

Step Four: Fold clothes & vacuum out the air. Voila! Off you go!

And that, my friends, is how you get it done!

Please, Step into my Office...

Although I've been have to known to cause my own occasional F4 tornado of messiness, generally speaking, I like my house and life nice, neat and pretty. I like to know where things are. I get stressed when I can't find important stuff.  I wouldn't say I'm organizationally gifted, but this my friends is what a "my-desk-is-now-the-entire-dining-room" cry for help looks like:

I'd invite you to sit and stay awhile, but... as you can see, I still have a few things to get done...

The Things I'm Saying Hello To!

Since I have long belabored all the things I'm going to miss in the States, and all the preparation I'm doing to get to me Cape Town, how about a little preview of what I have to look forward to over there in South Africa? Here goes:

A FREE seven day trip to Paris to see my sweet and wonderful friend Emily who is currently living in Paris, working as a nanny. In order to get to Cape Town, I had to make a connecting flight somewhere in Europe, so a stop-over in Paris was the perfect way to take a small break between my old job and my new job! Looking forward to drinking good wine, seeing the sights and spending quality time with Emily!

A new job: Living Hope Community Centre's vision is to bring the hope and compassion of Jesus Christ to the chronically sick and dying in a holistic way and do all we can to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. mission to spread the good news of Jesus Christ in a life-changing way and to encourage people to follow Him.

This view: You may start feeling sorry for me at any time.

A country with a complex history. I still have much to learn about it's culture and people:

Wildlife: And I do mean WILD!

Two words: CUTE African babies. This one is for you Kathryn Campbell & Casey Freeman.

Lots of wind. Like 40 mile an hour wind. All the time. I'm currently working on finding new hairstyles so this doesn't happen to me!

Driving on the left hand side of the road. God help us.

The Metric System: I've already downloaded several iphone apps to help me learn to convert all the medical numbers neccessary to take care of my patients and to know how warm/cool it is outside!

Rugby: No clue...

New friends: Courtney & Joey Lankford and their cute kiddos, who are also sent out from my church to work at Living Hope, and although we have never met, I'm hoping we become fast friends!

Also Danielle Schneider from BBC works with the Life Skills Education program and helped me lots in preparing to move over there!
oct_news_orig

A new disease. Since I've never worked with HIV/AIDS in any capacity, I have lots to learn!
A South African AIDS patient holds his antiretroviral medication.

A Cruiser Bike. They are all the rage. I'm somewhat stubbornly refusing to buy/rent a car. I'm going to see how long I can hold out. Pray for me. I have issues. I am cheap just like my Dad.

Hopefully that gives you a little picture of what's to come! Stay tuned for more!

I'm better now...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So you might have noticed I "forgot" to blog in the last few days. I didn't mean to lead you on like that.

It's not you, it's me.

I'm sorry to make you believe that on a regular basis I might blog, and then I just up and abandoned you last Thursday, leaving you hanging for approximately 3 whole days, with no explanation whatsoever... but I have
excuses reasons people! And they are as follows:

I got some sort of stomach bug late Wednesday night and couldn't get out of bed for two days. It was crappy. Literally. Too much information? I'm better now!

I had some sin in my life that me and Jesus had to have a little meeting about. We met, He talked, I'm better now.

On Saturday, I had an yard sale in the snow, where we may or may not be missing items we were not intending to sell. Maybe I'll be better off without them now.

I was missing my Daddy, so I wrote him a lot of notes. But he called on Saturday night and we talked for an hour and a half, so I 'm better now.

I had two long prayer meetings and a guidance team meeting all filled with really great and supportive people. I feel a whole lot better about leaving now.

I got to spend a delightful evening with my Aunt & Uncle and cousins who tell me that they love me a lot. I think my heart is beating a little better now.

I got to talk this morning at an all African-American church. I think I'm a better person for knowing that wonderful group of people now.

So can you forgive me? Will you be my readers again? Can we blog and make up?

I promise it will all be better now...

Won't You Be My Love?

So ya'll know how much of a music lover I am. In case you didn't know that little factoid about me, I pretty much have music playing 24 hours a day. I really don't like to do any chore or task or activity without some jamming tunes in the background. So, from time to time, I'll be forced to let my love of good tunes spill over to this blog, and share with you some of my favorite music and videos! Hopefully both at the same time!

Generally, I am known for liking "angsty" music. According to good 'ole Wikipedia, "angst" is a term that "describes intense feelings of profound emotional inner turmoil" or "general feelings of conflict between actual responsibilities to self, one's principles, and others, including God." So I guess I like music that tears my heart out and stomps on it. Prepare to be angsted.

As for today's musical post, I wouldn't go as far to say that I'm a "big fan" of Mercy Me, as I really don't know much about them or their music, but this song by them really spoke to me.  Here's the video I originally heard it over, and the lyrics follow below.

When you fall asleep tonight
In your warm and cozy room
Know that I'm awake
And I've got no shelter and no food

I am not alone
My friends are broke and lost
Looking for someone to lead them to my cross
I need your help, I need your help

Won't you be My voice calling
Won't you be My hands healing
Won't you be My feet walking into a broken world
Won't you be My chain-breaker
Won't you be My peacemaker
Won't you be My hope and joy
Won't you be My Love

The other side of the world
She is just a few days old
A helpless little girl
With no family of her own

She is not to blame for the journey she is on
Her life is no mistake
Won't you lead her to My cross?

Won't you be My voice calling
Won't you be My hands healing
Won't you be My feet walking into a broken world
Won't you be My chain-breaker
Won't you be My peacemaker
Won't you be My hope and joy
Won't you be My Love

To those I call My own
To those I've set aside
As spotless without blame
The chosen ones My bride

We will be Your voice calling
We will be Your hands healing
We will be Your feet walking into a broken world
We will be Your chain-breaker
We will be Your peacemaker
We will be Your hope and joy
We will be Your love

More angst to come in the following days.... I'll let you take a minute to process this one first...

Don't move...

No really, I mean it. You might want to seriously reconsider packing up your stuff and actually geographically relocating, unless you have some sick and twisted enjoyment of the following:

Using body wash as hand soap. Why would I buy new hand soap when I have a perfectly good container of body wash that needs using up before I leave?

Eating only popcorn, canned artichokes and rice for a week. This is what will be left in your pantry after packing. Mmm Dinner!

Showering with only the clear liner in place. I took down the outside curtain a few days ago only to be left feeling... a little... well... ehem...vulnerable.

Ascending and descending 12,000 flights of stairs, 12,000 times with 12,000 HEAVY boxes and barely escaping to live to exaggerate tell about it. Ouch. Ugh. Argh. Humpf. Whew. Geez.

Using a shoebox as a nightstand.

Using suitcases as dresser drawers.

Sleeping on mattresses... on the floor.

Using curse words. More than I care to admit. Well actually, I just did admit it :)

Losing things. A lot of things. Like everything I own at least once. Some things will be found again. Others will not. You didn't really need clean socks today anyhow. Try not to cry. Try not to cry. You aren't pretty when you cry.

Inhaling dust bunnies... or dust pterodactyls... or  entire dust alien planets with alien populations that are flying warships armed with dust ray guns.... You get the point. Moving is dusty.

Letting random Craigslist people in your house. Wow. There are some odd ones out there. And they have CATS. Lots of cats.  Cats with diabetes. Lord, help us all.

Using plastic serving ware for more than a month. Yum. Not.

Watching downgraded cable. Sorry, championship games are not included, and if suddenly you find yourself watching the mayor's weekly meetings because that is the only thing on, you should just turn it off all together and walk away.

Living in total chaos. I have pictures, but you don't want to see them. No one should ever see them. I shouldn't even see them.

Scratching the hardwood floors right before you are supposed to get your deposit back. What the heck!?! Hello, you God sent bottle of Old English!!! Where have you been all my life!?!

Yard sales... In January. After an ice storm. An ice storm in which little old ladies break hips. That's all I have to say about that...

Alright. That's it for today. I have to go look for the sanity and normalcy I misplaced sometime last week. You may pray for me. The end.

Humility: Part Two

Are you ever tempted to think you and Jesus are on good terms? Do you feel like you've done enough for Jesus today and you should rest and get a gold star for good behavior? Do you feel like you deserve to live life on spiritual cruise control?

Let me stop here and say, that if I ever think I'm doing well on my spiritual journey, someone please re-read Luke 17:7-10 to me. See below and read with caution:

Jesus said: “When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say, ‘Come in and eat with me’? No, he says, ‘Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’ And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not. In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’”

In my response to reading this scripture, alot of excuses come to mind. "But, Lord, I had a good attitude today at work. I worked as if it were unto you. I served the least of these. I kept my mouth in check. I didn't lose my temper. I resisted that temptation. I exhibited the fruits of the Spirit. I kept the Ten Commandments. Don't I "deserve" a break? Aren't you going to tell me "well done"?

"No? You're not? You said I was SUPPOSED to do all those things? You own me? You paid a price for my loyalty?"

The Official Translation of Amy Helms: God does NOT owe me or you ANYTHING. Anything I do for Him is a small repayment for His sacrifice for me. I need to realize that I am forever in God’s debt and understand that I still have work to do, no matter how long or hard you or I have been working for the Lord.

David Guzniak says, "This is why it is so important for Bible teachers to emphasize what the Bible itself emphasizes - what God has done for us. When we realize all that God has done for us in Jesus, we want to serve Him out of gratitude. When our hearts are right, we live and act as if we are happy to have the privilege of being allowed to serve God. We only think that we are better than others are when we look to man, not Jesus. Every Christian is a "super-Christian" in Jesus. Truly spiritually mature believers will not be proud or arrogant about their spiritual "level."'

Matthew Henry says: "Whatever we do in the service of Christ, we must be very humble, and not imagine that we can merit any favour at his hand. We are all God’s servants, and, as servants, are bound to do all we can for his honour. Our whole strength and our whole time are to be employed for him; for we are not our own, nor at our own disposal, but at our Master’s. As God’s servants, it becomes us to fill up our time with duty; we ought to make the end of one service the beginning of another. When we have been working for God, still we must be waiting on God, waiting on him continually. Our principal care here must be to do the duty, and leave it to our Master to give us the comfort of it, when and how he thinks fit. Christ was among his disciples as one that served, and came not, to be ministered unto, but to minister; witness his washing his disciples’ feet."

Paul says: If anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. (Galatians 6:3-4)

Whew. Stop and take that in for just a minute...

And then get back to the work He has for you.

Humility: Part One

Do you ever stick your foot in your mouth and say the exact wrong thing at the exact wrong time? I sure do. A lot. Like once a day. Everyday. Twice already this morning.

My prayers as of late, have been for God to make me desperate for his Word and to keep me humble. Be careful what you pray for. Desperation may come at your own expense. Humility usually comes from circumstances that we wouldn't willingly put ourselves in. As usual, God just doesn't GIVE us the characteristics we want; He gives us opportunities and experiences to LEARN how those qualities work and what they look like. I have suddenly become really desperate for God's Word, not because God miraculously answered my prayer, but because of how badly I have needed truth and guidance in the midst of my circumstances. I've suddenly become more humble, because that is the only response I could muster in the face of my own shame.

So what should our response be, when by our own actions, we manage to find ourselves greatly humbled? Or greatly shamed? Or guilty of prideful moments?

David comes to mind as a man in the Bible that struggled with this issue. A great king made from humble beginnings. Sometimes he served God with wholehearted devotion, other times he did what he wanted to do, with disastrous consequences.

From my selected reading of Psalms 38-66, here is the official translation of Amy regarding David's thoughts on what we should do when facing situations like his:

1. Recognize that guilt sucks. It was eating David alive. It was making him literally, physically sick. In my mind, that's what's called conviction. Learn to listen to it. By ignoring our built-in, spiritual, check-engine light, we only make it worse for ourselves later. See Psalm 38:4 "My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden to heavy to bear."

2. Beg God (a lot) to hear our prayers of our need for him. See Psalm 38: 21 "Lord, do not forsake me, be not far from me, O my God. Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior."

3. Ask for forgiveness. See Psalm 51: 10 "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

4. Now rest. Breathe. Move on. Praise. God heard you. See Psalm 66: 19-20 "But God has surely listened and has heard my prayer. Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me."

God used my sinful moment to teach me something about me. To sharpen my character. To train my mind and my tongue, and I'm really glad He did. I needed it. So, I'm going to keep praying the same prayers, and just try to tread a bit more lightly....

More to come...

Just do it already...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just got home from the weekly missions staff meeting at my church and got to share with the Missions Team a bit more about my trip and what kinds of things I'll be doing at Living Hope.

Generally, they start the staff meeting with a time of devotion. This morning one of them shared from Luke Chapter 9. With sixty plus verses this chapter is jammed packed with stories. A very "busy" chapter if you will. Kim framed her story by sharing that a dear friend of hers recently passed away, in the midst a very busy season for Kim. When Kim heard that her friend had become ill, she had every good intention of reaching out to this person with words of encouragement, but time got away from her and she very tragically did not get to speak with her friend before he passed. What heartbreak Kim is now experiencing in the wake of losing her friend and longing for that chance again to speak to him.

I was so grateful Kim shared her story and her strong words of encouragement with the rest of us, to not waste a moment. Kim's words were a clear message to me to be obedient to what God is telling me to do, no matter the circumstances I currently am facing. Here's the passage from Luke 9: 60-62 in The Message that she shared:

Then another said, "I'm ready to follow you, Master, but first excuse me while I get things straightened out at home." Jesus said, "No procrastination. No backward looks. You can't put God's kingdom off till tomorrow. Seize the day."

Honestly, it makes sense for me to delay going to South Africa. Is anyone ever really READY to leave? It seems my "to-do" lists are never ending. I will always need more money. I could always use more time with my friends. Another time in my life might make more sense...

But God's word says it all. No procrastination. You can't put if off until tomorrow. Seize the day.

Do it.

The Things I'm Taking With Me...

When you only get two 50lb suitcases, packing strategically is of vital importance. Here's what I have so far:

My tempurpedic pillow. I think it cured my migraines. Or maybe that was quitting my job, but either way, you are coming with me little one...

Headlamp. So sue me. I'm from Colorado. Safety and preparedness run in my veins.

Wool socks. No central heating and no carpet = freakin cold floors in SA. Thank you Emily Borders for the advice.

Contact solution. It's cheaper here, than there, so I bought a lot!

Lots of framed photos, so I can remember how much I love you all.

Good nursing shoes. It's like the difference between life and death. To my feet that is.

Two "woobies" or blankies or whatever you call them. My Dad gave me one of them, so it's special, and the other one is made out of this amazing sweater material. Hello, lover...

Your prayers.

My Jesus Story Book Bible. If you don't have one, GET one. You need it. I need it. Everyone needs it.

My new Mac Book. I have no idea how to use it yet, but I got a great deal on it! And now, I actually have all the letters that should be on a keyboard, my computer doesn't shut off from over-heating every ten seconds, and the screen stays in the full, upright and locked position. I'm easy to please people.

More books than I care to admit.

Lots of stationery. I hope my seriously-lightened social committment calendar will give me a little free time to "catch up on my correspondance."

More to come! If you had to go to Africa what would you take?

When you cry, I will always hear you.

I will always love you, even when no one else does.

I will always look after you.

I will never ever leave you.

I will always be with you.

I will always help you.

I always win.

I will always give you everything you need.

I will make your heart quiet.

I always know where you are.

I promise.

Love, God

The Things I'm Saying Goodbye to....

"George Thomas Kensington the Bear the First." My faithful bed-buddy since Jan-term 2001. Sorry bud. No room for you in the suitcase. When you get to the attic, don't listen to the Velveteen Rabbit. He tells lies.

My car. Enjoy your retirement in Mom & Dad's driveway. Afterall, you've earned a rest after 185,000 miles. Love ya. Mean it.

My sweet family. I can't talk about it...Tissue please?

The "Foxes on Knox" house. Good times, girls. Good times.

My Vicks Vapor-Rub Warm-Mist Humidifier, a.k.a "Eva". How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I literally can't breathe without you, you tall slender wonder of white molded plastic.

"Rob" the robot vacuum. You were a good little house bot. But then I sold you on Craigslist, and had to sweep the floors myself, like I was a regular person stuck in 1999, without your robot cleaning power. It has been nothing but agony and torture since. I will miss bossing you around every morning before I left for work. You took it so well.

My custom built, canary yellow & red Cannondale road bike. Don't worry honey, we're just on a break. Be nice to Christina.

Curls Rock by Bedhead. Goodbye nectar-of-life, sweet-milk-of-all-that-is-good-and-holy. At $16.99 per 5oz, I never could afford you anyways.... Here's to the frizzies.

Good 'ole 110 volt electricity. I'll try not to fry anything, like my friend Emily did, but I make no promises.

That's it for now! Stay tuned for my adventures in packing!

Jesus Calling by Sarah Young

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know that this blog is supposed to be your way of keeping up with me, and mostly comprised of my stories, but you can't keep up with me unless you are also keeping up with what God is teaching me. It's a my heart is connected to His heart kinda thing. So from time to time (or as of late, most of the time) I'll be posting just a little of what I'm learning along the way. Here's another great excerpt from a devotional I'm reading this year:

"I AM WITH YOU AND FOR YOU. When you decide on a course of action that is in line with My will, nothing in heaven or on earth can stop you. You may encounter many obstacles as you move towards your goal, but don't be discouraged - never give up! With My help, you can overcome any obstacle. Do not expect an easy path as you journey hand in hand with Me, but do remember that I, your very-present Helper, am omnipotent. Much, much stress results from your wanting to make things happen before their times have come. One of the main ways I assert my Sovereignty is the timing of events. If you want to stay close to Me and do things My way, ask Me to show you the path forward moment by moment. Instead of dashing head-long toward your goal, let Me set the pace. Slow down, and enjoy the journey in My Presence."

Romans 8:31; Psalm 46: 1-3; Luke 1:37

I don't know about you, but that speaks very loudly and clearly to my heart. It was truth I needed to hear today and a lesson I need to keep learning.

God with you today & Love to all,
Ames

MLK

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The time is always right to do what is right.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Side note: Honestly, I really don't know that much about Martin Luther King Jr, which is sad. I guess I missed that part in high school history class. It was only in college, after my good friend Jena took a month long train tour of the South called Injustice Across America, that I started to hear rumblings about this great man. Maybe I should have paid more attention, since we celebrate a national holiday in his honor and all! From what I've read, I really enjoy a lot of what he has to say. And there is a lot of his material out there! I know I have more books that I can possibly read at the moment, but I think I'll be adding his biography or autobiography to my list of reads. Recommendations appreciated!

What do I want out of this experience?

So what's in it for me? Let's be honest, I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think anything good would come out of it along the way! My hope and prayer is that some very tangible things and some intangible things will be gained from this experience.

Here's what I think I'd like to walk away with.
  • A desperate hunger for God's Word. In reality, we all know that God's word is our daily bread, but sometimes it gets a little lost in the hustle and bustle. I know that I'm going to need that sustaining wisdom and power like I never have before.
  • A greater daily dependence on the Lord and His provision. Too often, I depend on me to get me through each day. Since I'm way in over my head here, my only option is to learn to turn to Him first for my day to day needs.
  • Better communication skills. How can I talk honestly with patients that are dying? How can I share my faith candidly and without hesitation? Do I allow the Holy Spirit to speak through me?
  • Career experience. I'm fairly certain that in my nursing career I never want to be far from the poor, the sick and the dying. Jesus never was and I'm taking that as a hint. I hope that I gain valuable nursing skills that allow me to continue to serve this special group of people for a long time.
  • Travel! Who doesn't love a bit of adventure every now and then?
  • I've never lived by myself. I'm more than slightly an extrovert, and hugely an external processor, so loneliness may be something I have to fight. I'm hoping the quiet time pushes me into the Bible more and more.
  • And lastly, for effectiveness in ministry resulting in salvation. Statistically, only one in seven North Americans has ever shared their faith with someone outside their family. That probably includes me if you are counting actual salvations resulting from anything I've said or done. I'd like to see that change.
Thanks for holding me accountable to these things and for praying through them with me. It's going to be a crazy ride! Thanks for traveling along this road with me! Love to all!

Why exactly are you doing this?

People keep asking me that question and the answer seems so complicated sometimes. I get confused on where to start. I don't know how much to tell them. But in my mind, it's rather simple, because it needs to be done.

Because I can do it.

Because I have lived far too long in far too much comfort.

Because suffering sucks.

Because I care.

Because God loves all of us.

Because no one else is doing it right now.

Because God has gifted me with talents and time and resources and education.

Because it makes me cry.

Because I can't think of a single good reason not to.

Because I want to.

Because by loving the least of these I am loving God.

Because the Gospel really is GOOD NEWS worth telling.

Because HIV is preventable and treatable.

Because God said so.

Because God called me to.

Exactly what I needed to hear...

I read this tonight while settling into bed after a day spent worrying about everything. Deep breath. You can do this. Take heart.

"I am able to do far beyond all that you ask or imagine. Come to Me with positive expectations, knowing that there is no limit to what I can accomplish. Ask my Spirit to control your mind, so that you can think great thoughts of Me. Do not be discouraged by the fact that many of your prayers are yet unanswered. Time is a trainer, teaching you to wait upon Me, to trust Me in the dark. The more extreme your circumstances, the more likely you are to see My Power and Glory at work in the situation. Instead of letting difficulties draw you into worrying, try to view them as setting the scene for My glorious intervention. Keep your eyes and your mind wide open to all that I am doing in your life."

To Silas & Isaiah Bryant- For the ministry of dance parties, Star Wars helmets, and Shnarky Who Pants Who

To my Momma- For the ministry of everyday phone calls and for self-sacrifice in the face of losing her husband and daughter overseas at the exact same time :)

To my Daddy- For the ministry of adventure, unlimited possibilities and for protecting my right to speak the name of Jesus anywhere and anytime I please.

To My Brother Ben- For the ministry of fixing my computer and answering really random technological questions at all hours of the night.

To My Brother Dan- For the ministry of deep thinking, long conversations, bicycles and homemade gifts.

To my Grandparents- For the ministry of leading by example from day one and for how much you love me.

To Anna Smothers- For the ministry of getting fired up for the things of God and for your example of prayer.

To Gary Howard- For the ministry of prayer, big thinking and super-duper encouragement.

To Sarah Samuel- For the ministry of prayer and teaching that brings me to tears on a weekly basis.

And to many many more... But since they are playing that music over my speech now, I gotta go! Love to you all...
